IEFA: Capacity Building for American Indian Heritage Week

This course will provide participants with IEFA integration in preparation for American Indian Heritage Week. Topics include: tipi etiquette, The Essential Understandings, and an overview of our diverse tribal representation in GFPS.

IEFA Book Study: Legacy

This book study will explore laws and policies that have had a lasting impact on Indigenous communities and students. We will meet in person for two hours at a time to discuss our readings, three times throughout the school year. These sessions will also include special guests.

IEFA: Science and Health

This course will explore opportunities to incorporate American Indian traditional knowledge including: astronomy, climate, food systems, and cultivation. We will provide resources to integrate IEFA into your Science and Health curriculum.

AIS: 500 Years of Federal Indian Policy

This course will focus on the perspectives of American Indians and their relationship with the federal government for the past 500 years. We will examine each federal policy time era, and how it has contributed to contemporary circumstances among American Indian people. This course will also discuss how to incorporate American Indian resources into your classroom meeting ELA and Social Studies standards.

AIS: American Indians in Television and Film

This course is unique in the fact that it is available for 3 OR 6 hours of PIR credit. Participants must sign up for the in-person preparation session (3 hours on 12/5 OR 12/10) For an additional 3 hours of credit, participants will check out or view one of the approved films or TV series episodes to watch independently. After an independent screening, participants will schedule a debrief session with one of the facilitators.

IEFA: GFPS Demographics and Activities (3 HRS only)

This course is 3 hours of credit, please choose one date to attend. This informational PIR will provide insight to GFPS’s unique Indigenous student population. We will also learn more about the Indigenous Education Department ceremonies and celebrations.

AIS: Montana Tribes

Participants will explore our 12 Montana tribes.  This will include the historical federal policy of these distinct groups, as well as contemporary issues. This course will focus on the Essential Understandings and the unique and distinct qualities of Montana’s tribes.

AIS: Imagery and Identity

This course will first examine how the images of American Indian people have been presented to non-Native audiences and the consequences of those portrayals. We will then examine contemporary figures in fiction, poetry, literature, art, science, philosophy, politics, and Oral Tradition to make classroom connections.

AIS: Contemporary Issues

Participants will examine how current topics correlate with cultural, social, and political issues. Participants will learn how to meaningfully incorporate American Indian resources through literature, research, and inquiry methods.
