Healthy Habits


First of all, let me wish you a Happy New Year! Celebrating the beginning of the next 365 days is a pleasant custom that brings family and friends together. Along with fresh starts and the opportunity for do-overs, the New Year sparks some people to make resolutions. I have never been a big resolution maker. Maybe it’s because I remember that famous line from Mary Poppins where she says something about “a pie crust promise…easily made and easily broken” and I have always found any resolution I made to be just that…a pie crust promise.

Instead of resolutions, I try to think about developing habits. This past year I have been working to develop the habit of gratitude (see Newsbits, 11/25/13), the habit of having a protective mindset (see Newsbits, 11/18/13), the habit of goal-setting/goal accomplishment (see Newsbits, 8/26/13) and several others I won’t bore you with except this one: the habit of healthy living. As the saying goes, “If you don’t have your health, you don’t have anything.” I want to develop the habit of not taking my good health for granted. And, as the GFPS Employee Wellness theme for this school year states, “make the rest of your life the best of your life.” I want to develop habits that make each tomorrow even better than today.

Creating new habits takes energy, knowledge and time. To that end, will you please mark your calendar for next Wednesday, January 15 to attend the GFPS Wellness University at PGEC? Anytime between 3:00 and 6:00, you can get energized by visiting interactive stations, you can be screened by Benefis professionals to establish health benchmarks, you can gain knowledge about a variety of healthy topics, and…you could win a great prize!! The time you will spend at the Wellness University will be time well spent. I look forward to seeing you there!
