Help for Steve Olszewski

Steve shirt logoSteve Olszewski, the First Engineer at Loy Elementary, was in a motorcycle accident just before the 2019-2020 school year. Steve has worked for GFPS for 24 years. He was a swing custodian in every school in our District, and he was either a Second or a First Engineer at Lewis and Clark, Morningside, West, and Great Falls High before coming to Loy as our First Engineer.

Steve is currently in Salt Lake City receiving care and will stay hospitalized until he can get around on his own.

The staff at Loy Elementary will be selling t-shirts as a fundraiser to help with Steve’s medical bills. They will be dark in color with a white logo (see above image) on the top left of the shirt – right under the shoulder.  The shirts will cost $12.00.  If you do not wish to purchase a t-shirt, but would like to contribute, we will accept donations of any size.

To order, please email pam_margaris@gfps.k12.mt.us with your size and work location. To pay with a check, please make it out to Loy PTA, who in turn will cash the check for us so we can give the money to Steve.  If you have any questions, please contact the above email.

Halloween and Cultural Awareness

Halloween is this week! Take this opportunity to discuss with your students about Halloween costumes and Cultural Appropriation. Teaching our students to be mindful of the kind of costume they may choose or see during festivities is a great teaching moment. Some topics you could consider are the “Three S’s”:

  • Source: Think first about the source culture. Is this a culture that has been historically discriminated against or oppressed (African Americans, American Indians, and Latinos)? If so, consider the elements of the costume and proceed with caution!
  • Significance (or Sacredness): What’s the significance of what you’re taking? Is it something that is of major cultural significance, or maybe even something sacred? For example; American Indian headdresses, are the equivalent of military medals or honors. They’re not decoration or hats or jewelry or something ornamental. They mean something, and reserved for a group of people who have achieved the honor to wear one.
  • Similarity: And finally, think about the similarity of what you’re doing.  Are you interpreting or being inspired by someone else’s culture, or are you making an exact copy?
    • Cultural appreciation is the good kind of borrowing; making a Moroccan soup for dinner and talking with your family about it.
    • Cultural appropriation can be and usually is offensive; turning a hijab into a costume mocks the person who wears it every day as part of their religion.
