Superintendent's Message

GFPS Thanks Our Local Businesses

As I read Todd Klassy’s opinion piece in Friday’s Tribune, I found my head bobbing up and down in agreement.  You can read his article about shopping locally at this link:  www.greatfallstribune.com/story/opinion/2016/11/22/please-read-begin-holiday-shopping/94305862/

Mr. Klassy provided a variety of facts about small businesses which are worth knowing and understanding, but the one that really stuck with me was this:  For every $100 spent at a locally-owned business, $45 goes back into the community and local tax base.  For every $100 spent at a chain store, only $13 comes back.

This piece of information made me pause for a moment as I thought about the many, many local businesses that support our kids, our community and our future in big and little ways.  I was tempted to start listing in this article all the local businesses that provide financial, human and other support for our schools, but it is too long.  I probably don’t even know every single one as many of our local businesses support our schools without a lot of fanfare.

It also made me pause as I think about the taxes they pay and how they support our schools.  Local businesses pay income taxes to the state of Montana.  A percentage of those taxes comes back to GFPS via the state’s share of our educational funding.  Our local businesses also pay local property taxes which support our schools via the operational and now bond levies.  Many of them talked to me about both during the levy campaign.

His article really made me realize that shopping locally is as much about ensuring that our community continues to grow and thrive as it is about finding the perfect gift for all the special people in my life.  I wasn’t able to do any shopping on “Shop Small Saturday” but that doesn’t mean I can’t make it a priority for the rest of the holiday season.  Thanks for thinking about it too.  I know our local businesses really appreciate our support just like we appreciate theirs.

Take care.  Be safe.  Stay well.
