Intentionality

We often fall into the trap of believing students “should” understand simple concepts. This may not be the case! Do not assume that students will have the necessary vocabulary, background knowledge, and other tools to understand and link to new content. Be intentional about explicitly teaching the background necessary to fully understand and topic. Intentionality implies that planning is involved. For example, if you’re intentional about vocabulary, it might mean planning your vocabulary strategies before you teach a lesson or unit. If you’re intentional about LEP instruction, it means purposeful decision making during the pre-planning stage of lesson development. Being intentional means being purposeful about the questions we intend to ask, the materials we intend use, or the tasks we intend to assign. Additionally, be prepared to anticipate misconceptions and be proactive at addressing them.
