Steve Opheim
Thanks for your interest in the Great Falls Adult Basic and Literacy Education (ABLE) website and program. ABLE has a faculty of four teachers.
I grew up in northeastern Montana in the town of Opheim, named after my great grandfather who was the first postmaster of the town. Later my family moved to Sun River, MT where I graduated from Simms High School. I then attended Western Montana College in Dillon and graduated in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science in secondary education endorsed to teach mathematics with a minor in physical science. After teaching several years in class B and C schools in Montana, I took a position with the Great Falls Public Schools in 1982, and since have taught a variety of levels and age groups of mathematics and science. I completed a Masters of Education degree at Northern Montana College in Vocational Education. After teaching over 15 years at Great Falls High School, I began teaching in the ABLE program and have more than 9 years experience instructing adults.
I love teaching mathematical concepts and am rewarded by the look on students' faces "when the light goes on". While I specialize in math education, my focus, I realize, is the success of the student and their ability to function in our society. I spend much of my day saying, "You can do this!" or just encouraging students who have had a poor experience with education in the past.
